Taking a Leap

Allow me to preempt the story with sharing the fact that my wife is scared of flying. So for her birthday, I decided to take her skydiving. Makes perfect sense right…?

It was one of those things we always talked about, but never did. In the spirit of pursuing adventure, this year just felt right.

However, each day that passed as we approached the big day, the nerves got a little more fidgety. To try and make yourself feel better, you do some homework, research the facts, review safety statistics, and tell yourself – everything is going to be fine. I believe it is just human nature to do so, anytime you try something new, no matter what it is.

Then the big day. The big moment. You arrive at the airfield and everything gets real. The weird thing is that all of a sudden, all fear fades away. You go through some training, get geared up and are ready to go. Later, when I spoke to my wife, she shared with me that she was completely calm in the plane. She had zero anxiety or fear. This is a person who is usually scared to fly on a commercial plane. Never mind, a small propeller plane with twelve people jammed in the back.

After about 20 minutes in the air, you get to an altitude of 10,000 feet, move your way to the door and jump out. It was amazing! The feeling is exhilarating. Please know that I am using this word only because no other words are available in the dictionary to better describe the feeling, and this word falls well short of properly describing the experience.

If the opportunity ever makes itself available to you, I strongly recommend that you take advantage of it. Don’t allow fear of flying stop you from giving it a try. My wife is proof of that statement. She enjoyed it so much – she is going back with our two daughters in the Spring, for a girls trip and doing it again.
