Diving the Barrier Reef

The second and final phase of our newest adventure is complete. As you are already aware, we spent the four months (Jan-April) studying, taking quizzes, practicing in the pool, taking the final written exam and successfully completing the four open water dives required down in Key Largo at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef to become Open Water Diver Certified.

All of this was building up to our next greatest adventure of diving on one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, and we were not disappointed. Our adventure took us down to the Turks and Caicos Islands, where we stayed on Grace Bay, and dove just a few miles off the coast.

The entire dive was managed by Dive Provo. I have to say that they were amazing! First class service. True professionals who made the day enjoyable.

Our first dive of the morning was at the “Aquarium”. We were welcomed by dolphins, including two pups swimming with their mom. Visibility was great, the water was relatively calm, moderate current and the weather was perfect.

Our second dive was at the “Cathedral”. The conditions were perfect. Was able to see a lot of sea life, including a barracuda, who decided to visit. In the process, my dive partner set a new personal record of 71 feet, which is impressive for a 12-year-old.

Overall, it was an amazing experience. The Turks and Caicos is amazing for both divers, and those who would rather snorkel. We will dive for years to come. We’re already discussing our next dream dive spots.

When I got back to the hotel and downloaded the videos and photographs from the dive, I was left a bit awe struck. The peaceful serenity during these kinds of dives cannot be explained with words. Thought that I would share this one, in hopes that everyone might feel the same way and take the opportunity to dive.

From a “New Adventure” standpoint, we have finished our personal goals and moving on to the next one.
